Health Care for African American
The health situation among the African American Blacks’ citizens of the united state of American is still at risk in the public. The contribution of this adverse effects is widely base on the luck of information among the citizens due to decrease in educational levels and in personal resources, the luck of awareness to health problems, luck of information to risk factors and the luck of capacity to access medical services among other factors like racial and ethnic diversity. The research show that life expectancy rate is shorter for the blacks at the early childhood or at birth than that of other Americans and the phenomena reverse itself at the older age. However, the African American of age 65 and above is said to the rate their health less positively than other Americans.
The objective of this research is to identify the health problem situation and ways of improving the health sector to meet the needs of the people.
The review on health status of the African American in the united state shows tremendous factors that affect their health ranging from morbidity and mortality rate that is higher than the general population. This has been contributed by the luck of awareness of health problems, inadequate personal resources, the knowledge on causes and risk factors, and the decrease in capacity to access medical care among the youth.. Most of those who are at risk are the Black elders or African American having perspective on historical influence on health issues. The education status is widely varied from those who did not attend school at all to those with doctorates. However, the poverty status shows that the percentage of African American is twice that of African American and it increase as the age advances. Moreover, review depicts that African American between the age of 70s and 80s have supportive care from their loved ones, children, grandchildren and other members of the extended family. African American had the perception of bias of social cultural background on racist base on the difference between the Blacks and Whites in the United States. This affects the relationship between the doctor and the Black patient (Hopp & Duffy, 2000).
Strategies to improve health care
According to the research conducted on health issues among African American, the pattern of risk shows the trend on mortality, morbidity, life expectancy, and self- related and functional disabilities. To improve access to medical services, Community- Base Service initiative formed will co-ordinate delivery of services to the people with misconception in races due to diversity in culture, geographical isolation, and the coverage category of the health care. This will also remove the perception by black terming the process of receiving health care as a demeaning and humiliating experience when it comes to long wait and feeling of racism in the health centers. To improve service delivery, Community Members-Base Organization will be necessary to deliver services and uniting the African American community with the service delivery system (Jackson, 1988).
To foster the quality of life in African American communities, Health and Quality of Life program establish will play a role in building healthy communities that will work to get rid of health problems through healthy feeding, keeping body fitness and prevention. The initiative also educates on measures to keep good health and empowering communities in changing life. African American had so much stick to their culture and that resulted in the need to change their lifestyles and adopt inter-relation with other communities. To improve on health awareness, student in public schools are required to undergo health education programs during their school sessions before the completion of their courses (Spector, 2000).
The Social and Kinship Network policy put in place will address the issues of health behaviors. The research on the informal network shows that there is intergenerational family support among the family members and the members of the extended family at large in taking care of their loved ones. The families take a crucial role in transportation, medical examination management, ensuring of a good diet administration, exercise and monitoring the condition of chronic illness (Basu, 2001).
However, church has been seen as the simple of unity of different communities in traditional African American society. This has lead to the formation of Faith –Base Institution policy to promote cohesion of inter-communities relationship. The social connections are made possible and this enhances networking in delivering information, educating and offering spiritual enrichment.
It is of great importance to understand that health care has provided an avenue to get access to current opportunities to have knowledge about barriers facing African American families and to share resources. Participating in delivering service to the community, helps the organization to acquire information needed to enhance further strategies to outreach the African American communities.
