On many occasions, people have considered stress as any situation or moment when things seem to have become too much for an individual to withstand. This understanding is true to a certain extent. Stress is anything that poses a challenge or threat to the well-being of an individual. In this case, the well-being of an individual includes the peace of the mind, normal functioning of the entire body, and healthy interaction with other people. On the other hand, stress is anything that can cause negative effects on an individual’s well-being.

Recently, statistics have indicated a rising trend of stress and impacts of stress among students, especially in colleges. Students are individuals at an age when they wish to make the most of their life and live it to the full. Thus, any activity that proves to be demanding to them will amount to stress. Parenting is another factor that contributes to stress among students. This happens during a mismatch between wishes or demands of a parent and those of a student. Apparently, during the teenage years, students tend to be defiant to any person, including their parents. When parents reject wishes of their children, they feel that parents are being unfair, which causes stress to them.

Students suffering from stress have a high tendency to forget things at a higher rate than students with peace of mind. Some students deal with such moments by finding exiting activities such as sports and other functions that increase contact with other colleagues. The effects of stress are severe when an individual stays alone. Thus, interacting with friends and keeping being busy has often worked for some students in an effort to reduce or avoid stress effects. Such students have continued to perform well in studies and maintained stable relationships with peers and teachers in schools.


Stress is part of the daily lives of all individuals, regardless of the age category or occupation. Students need to learn how to cope with different life situations that cause stress. It is also advisable that the school management find it suitable to include stress management education in the curriculum of schools at all levels. Having knowledge of the causes of stress among students is helpful in preventing and controlling its effects.
