The Indian culture is reported to be a very warm culture which has much reverence for hospitality. This is often depicted in the way the Indian people treat their visitors. It is reported that simple gestures such as Namastey is a depiction of both respect and ritual. It is further reported that home is considered as a place where the heart is and as such the culture dictates that the people should do all they can to ensure that a visiting person to the home is made most comfortable at home. Hospitality of the Indian culture is deeply rooted even in their language where we have saying such as, “Atithi Devo Bhava” which translates to, “the guest is truly your god.” Considering a guest as a god will mean that all the members of a family do all they can to ensure that a guest has a great time in their home. This indeed is the Indian culture and the Indian people go great lengths to ensure that their visitors have had great times in their homes (India, 2009).
It is reported that even asking the person in India for direction will earn one a company to the place where one needs to go. At the Varanasi air port there is a welcome sign reading, “the holy city welcomes you.” The Indian community is structured in a manner that ensures that hospitality is not hindered from being expressed. A women inn the Indian culture is a backbone of hospitality expression. Right from the time that a guest calls at a home, the presence of women is ever felt. She will start by finding out which delicacies that the guest prefers and then proceed to prepare the delicacies. The women visitors are expected to accompany their host to the kitchen for the preparation of meals as the men catch up with the male host. It is even reported that a family can postpone a journey in case of an abrupt visitor showing up (India, 2001).
The Indian culture demands that children should respect the elders and their parents. In the Indian culture children should touch the feet of the elders in order to request blessings. This “touching feet activity” is still strong among the Indian communities and is a show of how close the Indians hold their culture. It also shows that Indian children show respect to their elders and that the elders and parents expect respect from their young ones (Articlebase, 2010).
The Indian culture is a warm culture which depicts a lot of hospitality. This comes out clearly when the Indians are treating their visitor. A visitor in the Indian culture is considered a god and as such is handled with a lot of due care. It has been reported that a family can inconvenience itself for the sake of treating a visitor well. Among the Indian communities, when children are brought up, they are expected to show respect for the elders and their parents. The children often touch the feet of the elders to request for blessings.
