According to Schmalleger (2000), over 40, 000 deaths among the youths in Canada are linked to drug abuse, and this trend occurs in a yearly basis. In addition, research asserts that, in 2011, over 20 % of students have avowed the fact that drugs were either sold, offered or given to them in school. This ascertains the projection that more than 40% of school children have indulged in illicit substance use. An alarming trend indicates that more than 80% of students drink alcohol. Thus, Sloboda and Bukoski (2003) indicate that the most abused drug substances among high school students in Canada include marijuana, alcohol, and pain relievers such as tylenoland codeine.
This project identifies drug usage among the youths in high schools as a significant problem that requires urgent prevention and recovery measures. This study also discusses reasons why children are engaging in drug abuse, which results in eroding of school’s reputation. Finally, the study aims to help the students that are involved in drug abuse through indicating the risks associated with it.
The goal of this project is to help the individuals who are primarily the youth. Thus, through helping the youth, the project also focuses on lowering the crime rate, reducing mental health problems, and minimizing the rates of drug abuse in Canada.
Four main risks have been identified as the main challenges faced by the project. The first risk involves lack of cooperation from the participants who might deem the project as uncool and worry about how their peers will think of them, if they coordinate with efforts of the project. Secondly, the project anticipates poor results as another risk, which might result in case the efforts are not fully coordinated. Poor results in this case refer to the not meeting the goals or a goal intended by the project. Thirdly, the participants might consider the project as a joke or as a risk. This is because they might doubt the seriousness of the project. In addition, lack of seriousness poses a risk to the project because if some participants fail to attend the meetings daily, the results achieved might be a far cry from what is intended. Lastly, the seriousness of the stakeholders also poses a risk to the project, because the stakeholders might be required to participate in funding of the project and ensuring that the members required to attend the meeting comply.
Through the project, it is expected that there will be a significant drop in crime rates as many students will stay at school and attend lessons. This is because United Nations (2010) indicate that drug abuse is one of the causes of the increased crime rates in Canada. Thus, the program will be an eye opener to the students as it will educate them to regard the benefits of restraining themselves in engaging in the abuse of drugs, which leads to criminal activities.
The second impact is that alcohol consumption among the high school children will decrease significantly as the project intends to incorporate parents as stakeholders who will be advised, regarding to the amount of allowance they provide their children with. Parents will also be involved in the project in order to be advised on how to stop using drugs in the presence of their children, as research provides that there are higher chances of such children to become drug abusers in the future.
Thirdly, the project anticipates that high school children will stay in school as there will be decreacing of the immoral activities that lead to unwanted pregnancies, STDs, and finally, the students’ dropping out of school. Thus, the project intends to keep children busy using co-curricular activities and other hobbies that they might be interested in.
One main unintended consequence is that some students will become more rebellious, regarding the intention of the projec, and opt to engage in drug abuse at a higher level. This will be detrimental to the project and the stakeholders as the project might be deemed to promote rebellion from the high school children.
Secondly, the high school children might not stop abusing drugs as they can utilize the project as a meeting point where drugs are trafficked and abused. This will paint a bad picture for the project and will be against its intended goals.
Legal and Moral Issues
Legal and moral issues play a significant role in the success against drug abuse. Parents are forbidden against directly or indirectly promoting drug abuse among their children. This is because the family features a lot as a source of pro-social norms. Thus, the family also contributes morally towards this topic as many parents are known to discourage their children from engaging in drug abuse. Teachers also are expected to ensure that students are on their best behavior and do not engage in drug abuse within the school’s precinct. In addition, it is illegal for a teacher to abuse drugs within the school compound, because the students can emulate the behavior from the teachers. The police also contribute significantly to this campaign, as they are charged with summoning teenagers that are out of school and suspected of drug abuse. Thus, it is essential for teachers and parents to maintain connections with the students both at school and homes respectively. This will make the students feel cared for and avoid engaging in drug abuse.
