  1. Discuss the debates around the impact of American-centrism on knowledge creation and consider how these have influenced your approach to and engagement with knowledge.

According to Grey (2010), two different camps in Europe and America were concerned with the publications of journals. One of the camps is Administrative Science Quarterly (ASQ), located in America; another one is Organization Studies in Europe. Approximately 92.7 percent of the authors who cited journals produced by ASQ were from North America. Grey also stated that new journal publication companies that emerged in Europe followed the citation of ASQ, proving the dominance of American centralism in knowledge creation. Most business schools were established in Northern America. Knowledge on management originates from studies conducted by business school students and practitioners; this explains why most journals are from North America. Clegg (2002) also argued that North American schools were responsible for creating most management journals. These journals mainly sought to find out the consequences of the organization’s existence. American-centrism has influenced my approach to engagement in knowledge. It is now clear that North American scholars concentrated mainly on companies in their country while producing most journals on management. Therefore, it is important for me to generate new knowledge that matches the practical management of modern day organizations considering the variables that affect my organization.

  1. Use Bell and Bryman (2007) to identify the potential ethical issues involved in researching your own workplace-based problem and suggest ways you could increase knowledge co-production through the development of more reciprocal relationships with research participants.

Bell and Bryman (2007) identified potential ethical issues that were involved in research. They established eleven principles that aim at reducing unethical behavior during the research process. These principles include harm to participants, dignity, informed consent, privacy and confidentiality. Other principles include anonymity, deception, affiliation, reciprocity, misrepresentation, honesty and transparency. A researcher will engage in unethical behavior if he/she tells lies to the participants during the process of research. In addition, researchers who engage in particular research process, knowing they have conflict of interest with the participants or the area of research, commit unethical behavior as well. It is vitally important for the researchers to refrain from releasing confidential information to the public. The researchers should also be honest by telling the participants all the information they need to know during the process of research. It is also ethical for the researchers to avoid asking the private life details of the participants. While researching on the problem of knowledge hoarding in our investment team, I will ensure that all the members of our team are willing to share their ideas on why they hoard investment knowledge. Moreover, I will keep the contributions of individual members of our team confidential. To increase co-production, I will tell the participants all the information I will use while trying to solve the problem of knowledge hoarding and ask them to raise their contributions on how to promote teamwork in our organization.

  1. Based on the issues (Politics & Ethics) covered this week, do you imagine yourself publishing the research findings from your research and if so, how might you go about this?

I imagine myself publishing the findings obtained during my research. If I decide to publish my research findings, I will follow the insights given by Pratt (2008) on evaluating qualitative research. One of the insights that I will follow is fitting oval pegs into round holes. Using this insight, I will make qualitative investigation to mimic quantitative research. I will achieve this by including qualitative data in my study. In addition, I will structure my research by starting with literature review, move to methods, results and, lastly, conclude the research. I will also try to make the evaluation criteria to be more acceptable. Other factors that I will use to strengthen my study and findings include trying to create open theoretical frames and create checklists while structuring my research. I will also try to frame my research so that it matches the emerging issues in research. This will help in strengthening the research; thus, it will be acceptable by major publication companies. I will also try to separate evidence of my research and interpretation of several facts that I discovered while conducting my research (Easterly-Smith et al, 2008). This will help peer reviewers to follow my research more appropriately.
