The focus of this paper is to evaluate the current US programs, which aim at reducing air pollution. The paper will discuss some programs especially those initiated by the government. The paper will evaluate the effectiveness of these approaches in minimizing air pollution and make recommendations for changing the current approaches. In conclusion, the paper will discuss how the implementation of the changes will take place. Air pollution occurs in several ways and, therefore, any approach needs to have these ways in mind.
There are several programs, which are in place with a similar goal of reducing air pollution. For instance, we have the Clean Air Act under the U.S environmental protection agency. The clean air act aims at preventing 230,000 early deaths in 2020. This act is the decree that describes environmental protection agency’s (EPA) obligations for improving and guarding the nation’s stratospheric ozone layer and air quality. Clean Air Act became law in the year 1990, and since then it has had minor changes in its objectives. Another notable program is the Air Guality Division which lies in the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (The%u0301riault & Jensen, 2009).
The objective of the Air Quality Division is to guard and enhance the environment and public health by controlling future and present sources of air pollution. To achieve this objective, the program monitors the air pollutants in the area and prepares pollution forecasts to enable people to reduce their exposure to air pollution. It also carries out researches and analyses to assess pollution sources and their influence on the public welfare and health. In addition to the above mentioned programs, we also have the US and California programs which aim at cutting down ship emissions. These programs target one of the biggest suppliers of emissions which pollute the air. To achieve this goal, all ocean-going vessels that go into California ports each year must change to lower sulphur content before coming within 24 nautical miles of the state's coast. The programs believe that the use of cleaner fuel will result in immediate reductions in harmful air pollutants like diesel particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and sulphur oxides (Maurer, 2008).
These programs have been effective in different ways in cutting down air pollution in the United States. Through the government programs, American citizens are aware of the air pollution issue and have been active in helping the government to achieve its objectives. The main reason as to why these programs have become successful is that the government ensures the programs involve the people in its objectives. For instance, the idea of growing forests is something the citizens have taken up with people planting trees in large numbers so as to increase clean air. Half of the air pollution is from trucks and cars and; therefore, it is encouraging to see people choose to walk or find some other means of transport instead of cars and trucks. In other efforts, people maintain their trucks and cars so that they do not emit unclean air. At home people reduce energy consumption, choose sustainable products, and eliminate exposure to chemicals which reduce air pollution.
In the recent times, there have been calls for people to work towards saving the world against air pollution, which is an indication that the past programs have not been effective. It is only the recent times that the programs have gained popularity in the achievements towards reducing air pollution. Their objectives have received backing from different institutions and organizations because of the immediate desire to minimise air pollution (Vallero, 2008).
There are some of the recommendations for changing the current approach to air pollution. The current programs do not cover the whole nation in reducing air pollution. The programs are working majorly in some states like California and Arizona. The other states do not have these air reducing programs which makes it difficult for the other programs to achieve their goals. It is, therefore, necessary for the government to involve all the states in the programs so that there can be uniformity in the objectives. The approaches need to also have strict rules, which when not obeyed, should have a penalty on the offenders. Anybody who goes against the set rules should face the law and receive penalties. For instance, anyone found smoking in areas not designated for smoking should be penalized because smoke pollutes the air. These rules can be available at home, work places, also on the roads where most of the air pollution takes place (Nowak, 2006).
There are many other ways in which American citizens can help in implementing the above changes to the air pollution programs. As a person, one should be careful in the different duties we carry out to ensure that they do not pollute the air. In so doing, we will be controlling the air pollution in the United States. For example, if the vehicle for use is emitting gases which are not friendly to the environment, it is the obligation of the owner to make the necessary services to the vehicle. This will be self-responsibility, and it will contribute towards reducing air pollution. Implementing air pollution changes can also be through supporting the government its course of minimizing air pollution. This can be achieved through citizens participating in the programs and giving out ideas on the best ways to reduce air pollution. This can make the government declare the programs a global idea hence it will achieve the set goals.
