Ban on Smoking at Colleges

Buy custom Ban on Smoking at Colleges essay

The debate on why colleges need to ban smoking at their premises is one that continues to raise controversy. Over the past decade, various colleges continue to issue smoke bans. This is the move that they say aims at enhancing positive habits among the students. Majority of the anti-smoking enthusiasts have cited various reasons in supporting the ban. They range from rights of the non-smokers to the public health issues that relate to second hand smoke.

Today, the number of colleges that continue to ban smoking have spontaneously increased over the past decade from zero to over 700 colleges (Massa, 2012). In this light, banning smoking in colleges is essential. Smoking is health imminence and one of the most hazardous activities that people have pursued. Today, several people have remained affected by the health related problems that arise from smoking (Gross, 2012). This is a prime reason why it is necessary to ban smoking at colleges.

Majority of people that has been affected by smoking are the passive smokers. The non-smokers remain in a high risk of contacting smoking related diseases and die prematurely than the smokers (Slough, 2010). The people who seek the ban because of the effects include the passive smokers who do not smoke, but interact with the smokers. The other group often suffered from this problem is the general population from the mainstream and side stream smoke. The increased risks arising from the smoke-filled environment in which students operate, explain why the ban is necessary. Thus, it is not justifiable for any student to smoke in from of another student who is a non-smoker (Massa, 2012).

Secondly, smoking affects the rights of the majority. People often argue that smokers have a right because it is legal to smoke. However, the mainstream population has equal rights too. The majority of students who think that second hand smoke is unsuitable for their health have rights as well. Thus, it is vital to ban smoking in order to protect their freedom in breathing air free from smoke (Gross, 2012).Protecting the rights of a smoker is analogous to limiting the rights of the people who need access to clean air.

It is essential to ban smoking in colleges since it is a first step towards achieving better health. If students in college face the ban that limits smoking, then they may reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke. A reduction in the number of cigarettes will go in hand in reducing the number of cigarettes that students smoke (Gross, 2012). Thus, this will eventually help them to stop smoking.

Today, World Health Organizations reports indicate that the majority of smokers are young people. This is a troubling phenomenon as the future of the world highly depends on youth and the young people in colleges. Moreover, the statistics indicate that majority of youths engage in smoking and are likely to perish due to smoking related diseases if they do not quit (Slough, 2010). Since the majority of these young people are in colleges, it is vital to ban smoking in order to protect the future generations.

In conclusion, banning smoking in colleges has certain justifications. In protecting the rights of non-smokers, it is vital to ban smoking. In enhancing positive attitudes that will enhance healthy lifestyles among the youth; banning smoking will constitute the first elemental steps. Lastly, the future of the world largely depends on protecting the current generation of youths who are vulnerable to smoking related diseases. Thus, it is crucial  to ban smoking at colleges for the sole reason of protecting other students from secondhand smoke.
