The purpose of this paper is to seek an opportunity to study about how multinational firms deal with corporate social responsibility in their home countries and globally. Analytical skills were employed to compare activities by two dissimilar firms working in the United States and another country in which they both carry out business. The two companies selected for this research were Saudi Aramco and Exxon Mobil which are both in the petroleum industry. Saudi Aramco is headquartered in Dhahran in Saudi Arabia whereas Exxon Mobil headquarters is at Irving, Texas in the United States.
Saudi Aramco has taken a corporate biodiversity initiative. The group instigated a corporate initiative to endorse preservation and protection of biodiversity within its areas of function as part of its ecological stewardship efforts (Sale 135). The plan consists of a number of elements, namely: creating a mangrove eco-park, cultivating one million mangrove trees, putting up hatcheries to replenish fisheries reserves, positioning man-made reefs in the Arabian Gulf, carrying out studies to build up a nationwide structure for fisheries management, setting up a wildlife sanctuary in Shaybah and putting into action specific protection actions for ecologically responsive surroundings within company areas of function (UNEP 145).
Exxon Mobil on the other hand has put in place some measures to ensure that it conserves the environment. The company makes use of natural raw oil resources to create energy. Special pumps are used to pump the raw material to the earth’s surface prior to the oil refining process. The company has also adopted a policy which puts emphasis on the protection of the environment (Skjaerseth and Skodvin 45). This policy comprises strategies such as working jointly with government and other concerned parties to improve environmental laws, avoiding wastage and respond quickly and efficiently to incident in case they occur.
In conclusion, this paper found out that both Saudi Aramco and Exxon Mobil are committed to the environmental protection process. Although implementing different strategies in implementing Corporate Social Responsibilities, both companies have successfully managed to participate in the conservation of biodiversity.
