Chesnut on War's End

What is Chesnut's mood/tone in this passage? Is she rejoicing at the prospects of the end of the war?

Chesnut’s tone indicates that she has compassion for the slaves, however she stands firm in the Southern ways and beliefs and she seems to be supportive of her husband.  It appears that she is against slavery but she is in a certain social status that she is most comfortable with, and doesn’t want to change her way of life.

How does Chestnut perceive what the future of "her" Negroes holds?

Chesnut seems to believe that the slaves will eventually have their freedom, which in turn will give them an opportunity to live as they wish. How does Chesnut view her husband's services in the Confederate army? She knows that her husband does what he must do, and she does not question or judge him. Why is this document an important source of information about southern life and culture?

It explains to people in this day and time how southerners lived, how they believed that slavery was acceptable.  It wasn’t something that they felt was immoral or unjust, it was simply a way of life that seemed perfectly normal.  Slavery was not known as a crime, but as a way of life for the slave owners as well as the slaves.  Slaves were considered as ‘employees’ who earned their keep and food for their families.

How does this document speak to the question of who freed the slaves?

Some may perceive that President Lincoln was responsible for freeing the slaves, although he had other reasons for the Emancipation Proclamation, which only freed those slaves who were not in loyal slave states or in those parts of the Confederacy under union control.

Discuss the findings of the committee. How are the southern states categorized in this document?

Congress represented that anyone deemed an enemy to the Union should be banned from any political position and should be excluded from any extension of the government.  The committee (Congress) felt that they would not be justified in allowing the rebel states to represent themselves without first enforcing such laws or other established rules in order to secure the rights of all citizens, a just and fair representation, protection against the rebel crimes,

Why does Congress deny the states representation in the government?

The committee (Congress) felt that they would not be justified in allowing the rebel states to represent themselves without first enforcing such laws or other established rules in order to secure the rights of all citizens, a just and fair representation, protection against the rebel crimes, and also temporary restoration of the rights of those who did not have a hand in the efforts to destroy and overthrow the Union as well as the Government.  Congress represented that anyone deemed an enemy to the Union should be banned from any political position and should be excluded from any extension of the government.

What were the long-term effects of Presidential Reconstruction?

As a result of the union of the Confederate States, the seats of political figures that were part of the Confederate States became vacant in 1861 during the second session of the thirty-sixth Congress by withdrawal of their duties, with the approval and instruction of the assembly and counsel of their States. The Confederate States are not presently entitled to representation in the Congress of the United States, and before such representation can be allowed, sufficient security for future peace and safety should be required.
