Mastering Communication

Mastering communication by Stanton N is quite an enlightening book that touches on the topic of communication. For a student studying communication, to say that the book is indispensable would be an understatement. Apart from being abundantly clear and concise, I found the book to be well-indexed, as well as rich in communication details and exciting examples in most of its text. Having been made as reference texts in a number of communication courses, the book presents exactly the communication points expected from an author of Stanton’s standing. Mastering communication is significant as a student’s source of reference, especially owing to its topics, such as presenting information which captures the process of communication.

Stanton presents this book in a way that explains not only how to write for different audiences, but also better grammatical guides that are by far superior to the ones provided by regular word processors. I find the book to have covered almost everything ranging from presentation styles to vivid grammatical examples, which in my view makes it an invaluable and essential read for anyone looking forward to being a better communicator in whatever field. The book represents a good source of information since it is not an old book (published in 2009). It does have amazing examples of details in communication. I will use it as a strong reference to my research work because it is rich in information.

Garner, d. (2012, march 12). Appetites Of a Poetry Virtuoso In America. new york times , p. 56.

Appetites of a poetry virtuoso in America, is an article that appeared in the New York Times newspaper on the 13th of March, 2012. Garner, a critic who wrote the article, goes into considerable detail in unmasking Jack Gilbert, who is termed as the poetry virtuoso by the headline. The writer reviews most of the poet’s works and paints a brilliant picture of the examples of poetry that Gilbert writes. Upon reading the piece, I came to understand Gilbert’s unique style of poetry and appreciate it even more. Garner goes so far as to publish two of Gilbert’s poems in entirety, in a bid to inform of Gilbert’s unique style, taste and attitude, and even belief in life. I find it informing and enlightening that at such an age Gilbert still accomplishes so much in art. I love poetry; therefore, I highly recommend poetry lovers to read the article.

Upon reading the piece, I come to understand Gilbert’s unique style of poetry and appreciate it the more. In my paper, I will quote this piece especially with regard to the writer’s unique review on the famous poet. Platforms through which storytelling carries on include poetry and newspapers. They are media which conveys information to an audience. This, therefore, corroborates with Quail’s admission with regard to the fate of the TV industry. Newspapers being another traditional medium of communication and storytelling will get a mention in my paper. It has information regarding the threats it may or may not attract from online channels and competitors. This article is not the most helpful; first because it does not cover all the styles included in poetry. It mostly talks about Gilbert’s unique style of poetry. However, it will be instrumental in giving me a little bit of information regarding how newspapers and poetry act as a powerful media that pass information to its audience.

Edwards, L. h. (2012). Transmedia Storytelling, Corporate Synergy, and Audience Expression. Global Media Journal , 140

In this article, Edwards argues that, transmedia storytelling reflects a phenomenon that shows evidence of trends that are competitive in nature. He goes on to explain that, it exemplifies both corporate synergy and the participatory culture that the audience generates. Edwards’s article seeks to examine both these competing dynamics together with other possible novel developments in transmedia storytelling across a number of platforms. The article also assesses how well the media in the recent times have been able to account for these upcoming transmedia trends. Inclusive of Edwards assessment are the key examples of online interactive reality television and also crowd sourced videos of music. This article is quite a crucial piece to quote, especially in writing a paper on novel trends in communication trends and new-age storytelling techniques and media. It has quite wholesome information on key ideas that regard novel channels of information, for example, the Internet.

Quail, C. (2012). Television Goes Online: Myths and Realities in the Contemporary Context. Global media journal , 120.

In this article, Quail ponders that with the advent of new technologies, the impact created has led to the affected industries and audiences to dive into debates on issues regarding costs, control, culture, strategic courses of action and desires.  The article goes on to examine the fact that, some pundits have gone so far as insinuating that, novel viewing platforms do signal the death of television. Quail also asserts that, this happens at the backdrop of the  public discourse, which  is underlined people’s assumptions that the migration to digital television allows viewers to get what they want whenever they feel like and thereby rendering the medium redundant or irrelevant. In the article, she indicates the significance is to assess the popular claims and thereafter provide analysis that is fair towards to what she believes is popularly exchanged myths about the inevitable death of TV. This article is of importance to my paper in that it will enable me to highlight some of these issues in the Canadian context-from where the writer based her paper- and, therefore, be able to apply the same to the global arena of communication. Quail’s article is of significant importance to my paper as a whole especially in looking at the aspect of TV as a means of storytelling in the new age.

Albrecht, C. (2009, may 26). newteevee is online video a threat to TV? Retrieved march 15, 2012, from gigaom website: http://gigaom.com/video/is-online-video-a-threat-to-tv/

In the above web article, Albrecht examines whether the television industry faces threat from online video. The article covers a number of online video sources of music including network shows like YouTube and other sites like NBC, which stream videos via their websites. Moreover, Albrecht’s article states that, more TV stations are going to be etched out of business at the advent of more online video sources of music and shows. The article posits that, the line between online video and television continues becoming blurred over the years. Outside factors, such as technology, continue to influence how people use the media.

This article plays an essential role in my paper in that; it examines the threats that online video posits to the television industry. It also tackles the input of Albrecht’s article versus Quail’s position regarding the existence and possible death of television. For quality academic delivery, both sides of the debate add points to my study. Therefore, in this paper, I am comfortable with citing from both articles in order to create a balanced paper. Albrecht’s article represents a significant source of an interesting material. It traces how the online videos found in the internet have attracted a sizeable audience. This deep research does a splendid job by gathering information that can be used to predict the future of the Television industry.
