Human Sexual Development

This is an article written by two authors: John Delameter (University of Winconsin) and William N. Frienrich (Mayo Clinic). They explore the sex behavior changes a child undergoes from birth until death. They argue that from infancy, sexual response can be noticed by the way the infants behave like sucking their fingers or toes and how they react to cuddling. This may effect the kind of stimulation preferred throught their lives. It is during the early childhood that children identify their gender usually at the age of three years. During the pre-adolesence years (between 8 and 12) a large percentage engage in masturbation.

Between the age of 13 to 19 years, puberty sets in and the drastic change in the bodies, the maturation of sex genitals and hormonal changes cause sexual attraction and fantasies. Increase in testerone levels in males and the unavailabilty of patners results in masturbation especially at the age of 13 to 15 years. At mid puberty towards the end of the teen age young people engage in heterosexual intercourse.

Legitimate sex is thougt to start after marriage, average couples normally have sex two to three times. The frequency of sex varies from social to physical factors in married couples. Many adults continue to engage in masturbation despite being in long-term relationships. Sexual satisfaction is important in relatioship and add value to marriages.

Sex is a biological process and is controlled by hormones. At the age of around 50 years, production of oestrogen hormone in women declines and it becomes uncomfotable for women to enjoy sex. Production of testerone in males declines at the age of 40 years and this causes a decline in sexual urges in men.

To conclude, the writers note that sexual development is a continuos process which starts at birth and terminates when a person dies. The factors that govern its progression are biological and social and they influence sexual behaviors, identity and attitude. These influences are diverse and control the society’s vitality.
