Research Paper Citation
Research Paper Citation When writing a research paper, many sources will be used to back up the thesis of the paper. The writer must be vigilant in giving credit to all sources used when supporting this thesis. The research paper citation is a note that allows the reader to see the source of the quote or paraphrased documentation in the paper. There are standard formats that will provide the student with the required style asked for by the professor. Dependent on the type of research paper it is, the professor might require APA (American Psychological Association), MLA (Modern Language Association), Chicago, Harvard or Turabian.
Most professors prefer APA or MLA.
Not to be confused with the bibliography, the research paper citation is also referred to as an ‘in text citation’. Instead of going to a separate page to find the source of a quote or idea, the citation will be found directly in the text of the paper itself.

It can be seen in this example that the year of publication follows the name of the author whether or not the name is in the sentence or parenthetical note.

The research paper citation allows the reader to see that the information has been found in a resource and that the quote can be found in the bibliography, works cited or reference page. The writer of the research paper has given credit to the original author of the quote and has kept himself from appearing to have written it himself. When writing a research paper the writer has to be extremely careful to avoid plagiarism at all costs.
