How to Find Things to Talk About

How to Find Things to Talk About

Sometimes, it is difficult to communicate with people you meet for the first time. Many of us do not even know what to say. However, you can prepare interesting and fun topics of conversation and listen to your interlocutors carefully to become good at conversations. Here are several communication tips that will help you.

Do Not Underestimate Small Talk

Often, we reject small talk for being sketchy or perfunctory. However, small talk plays a great part in communication: it helps strangers to become acquainted with each other without any discomfort. Let yourself engage in one of those small talks without feeling uncomfortable.

Ask Simple but Open-Ended Questions

This means that the question you ask cannot be answered with a couple of words but requires a more extensive and impersonated response. Ask simple and basic questions about your interlocutor’s lives that will help you become acquainted with him/her without violating his/her boundaries.
Here are some of the questions you may want to ask your conversation partners:

  • What is your hometown? Do you like it?
  • What is your job? Do you enjoy it? What is your favorite thing about it?
  • What would be the perfect job for you?
  • What kind of music do you like? What are your favorite bands?
  • Do you enjoy reading? Which are your favorite books and writers?
  • What is your best/oldest friend like?
  • What is the best thing that the life has given to you?

Ask about Your Interlocutor’s Interests
All of us like opportunities to share our hobbies and interests; if you face difficulties finding topics for a conversation, use one of the best small-talks tips: let your conversation partner share his/her passions.
Here are several questions you may ask about your interlocutor’s interests:

  • How do you usually entertain yourself?
  • Who is your favorite musician/author/athlete?
  • Do you play any musical instruments? Do you sing?
  • Do you like dancing?
  • Do you play any sports?
  • What are you good at?

Do Not Be Shy of Giving Compliments

If you have a chance to give a sincere and honest compliment, do not be shy of doing it. It can spark a conversation and make your interlocutor feel comfortable and appreciated.
Some compliments might include:

  • I like your finger ring. Might I ask where you got it?
  • The pie/turkey/lemonade you brought to the potluck was delicious. Can you share the recipe?
  • Baseball is a dynamic sport. You are in a great shape!

Remember to Keep an Eye Contact
As a rule, deep conversation topics require eye contact, and when you keep it, you demonstrate that you want to be engaged in conversation. In addition, eye contact will help you understand whether your partner likes the topic.
Whatever your conversation topic is, always remember to stay yourself. You should not pretend to be an expert in the topic that is alien to you. Stay sincere and share your interests with others and your will always feel comfortable.
